How Safe Is Your Home? A Fresh Look at Fire Safety Essentials

FIRE SAFETY

Fire safety often takes a backseat in everyday life, but a single incident can change everything in seconds. While many homeowners install smoke detectors and feel confident they’re protected, fire preparedness requires a more thorough approach. From outdated equipment to overlooked hazards, even a well-intentioned setup can leave gaps.

APS Security and Fire offers a fresh perspective on fire safety, highlighting the small yet critical steps you can take to make your home truly secure.

Check Your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke alarms are your first line of defense against a house fire. At a minimum, every home should have working alarms on each level, outside all sleeping areas, and inside every bedroom. These alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries replaced at least once a year. If your alarms are over 10 years old, they should be replaced entirely.

Carbon monoxide is another serious risk. In 2022, more than 1,200 people in the U.S. died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and over 100,000 visited the emergency room. Smart CO detectors send mobile alerts and integrate with alarm systems for rapid emergency response. Combined smoke and CO alarms offer added peace of mind and convenience.

Identify and Remove Common Fire Hazards

Many fires start due to everyday items that are often overlooked. Extension cords running under rugs, overloaded outlets, and unattended candles all pose risks. Kitchen fires often result from leaving food unattended on the stove or improper disposal of grease. In the laundry room, built-up dryer lint is a frequent fire hazard.

Take time to assess your home. Are space heaters plugged directly into walls, or are they plugged into power strips? Are combustibles, such as paper towels or curtains, kept away from stovetops and heaters? Identifying these issues now can prevent a devastating fire in the future.

Make an Escape Plan and Practice It

When a fire breaks out, every second counts. Create a fire escape plan that includes two exits from every room and a designated meeting spot outside. Go over the plan with everyone in the household, including children. Practice it at least twice a year.

Consider drawing a simple floor plan and marking the exits. During practice runs, ensure that everyone can quickly unlock doors and windows. In a genuine emergency, confusion and panic can hinder your ability to respond effectively. Practicing in advance builds confidence and prepares you for success.

Keep Fire Extinguishers Accessible

Fire extinguishers can contain a small fire before it spreads, but only if they’re in good condition and easily reachable. Place them in high-risk areas such as the kitchen, garage, and near exits.

Learn the PASS technique:

P – Pull the pin (be sure to have the nozzle pointing away from you)

A – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire

S – Squeeze the handle

S – Sweep side to side

Regularly check the pressure gauge and expiration date. If it’s time to replace the extinguisher or have it serviced, don’t delay.
